GBQ Capital Advisors, the Valuation & ESOP Advisory division of GBQ, a Top 100 tax, accounting, and consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Serena Amlie, CFA, ASA, has joined the firm’s national Valuation & ESOP Advisory practice as a Managing Director. She will be based in Saratoga Springs, New York, but will advise clients nationwide.

Serena is a nationally recognized ESOP expert who brings a wealth of ESOP and valuation advisory experience, with an emphasis on ESOP transactions, valuations, feasibility studies, and advisory. She holds various leadership positions within the national ESOP community and is a regular author and speaker on ESOP and valuation-related topics. Serena will be instrumental in the continued growth of our ESOP and valuation advisory practice,” said Brian Bornino, CPA/ABV, CFA, Managing Director of GBQ Capital Advisors.
Serena has practiced in the ESOP industry for her entire career. She has extensive experience advising ESOP trustees and sellers on valuations for initial ESOP transactions, annual updates, second-stage transactions, and terminations. In addition to her ESOP experience, Serena’s valuation experience includes estate and gift tax, mergers and acquisitions, executive compensation, buy-sell agreements, shareholder disputes, divorce, and other corporate matters.
Immediately prior to joining GBQ, Serena was a Vice President and ESOP Client Advisor at Spinnaker Trust, an institutional ESOP trustee. In addition to her valuation background, Serena’s experience on the trustee side of the ESOP industry allows her to offer a unique perspective to trustees and sellers alike on complex ESOP topics. Serena is passionate about making valuation understandable to all stakeholders, including sellers, boards, management teams, and broad employee bases.
Serena is the President of the New York/New Jersey Chapter of the ESOP Association and a member of the ESOP Association’s national Advisory Committee on Valuation. She is also the Co-Founder of the ESOP Alliance, a networking and educational organization designed to help young professionals develop their network and further their professional development in the ESOP industry. In addition, Serena has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) and Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) designations.
