Columbus-Based Builder Grows From $2M To More Than $300M In Sales Since 2020

3C Industries is a Columbus-based GC-CM commercial and mission-critical  specialty contractor (and authorized Butler Builder®) focused on pre-engineered metal building systems, taking projects from design assist and preconstruction through supply and erection. The company was founded in 2006 by a local general contractor and shifted its focus to the commercial market in 2020. Since then, revenue has grown from $2 million to more than $300 million, a trajectory Joe Timm, Chief Financial Officer of 3C Industries, traces to a clear inflection point: committing fully to the mission-critical space and earning the trust of national general contractors (GCs) on data center work.

"That trust compounds," Timm said. "Perform on one campus, and you get invited to the next one."

A Focused Strategy

Joe Timm | 3C Industries CFO | GBQ Client SpotlightTimm is quick to point out that 3C's common thread across projects isn't based on a single sector; it's the nature of the work itself. The company's best-fit projects are schedule-critical, technically complex and large in scale, delivered for sophisticated GCs who need a subcontractor capable of moving fast without sacrificing quality or safety. Data centers are a prime example, with compressed timelines, enormous square footage and little tolerance for delay, since every day of schedule carries real financial weight for the end user. Those same capabilities carry over into advanced manufacturing, distribution and other industrial work. While 3C maintains some intentional diversification, Timm said the company focuses on excelling in the sectors and with the GCs they serve.

Why Speed Drives The Business, & Where Finance Fits

According to Timm, most people outside the industry underestimate how much speed matters in commercial construction, particularly for data centers, where every day of delay before a facility goes live can cost millions of dollars in lost revenue. That urgency is exactly where sound financial and tax guidance earns its keep: disciplined work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and job costing to track real margin in real time, project-level cash flow forecasting, an entity and tax structure that keeps capital in the business, and clean financials that support surety and banking relationships. In this industry, Timm said, “bonding capacity is growth capacity”.

A Landmark Project

Timm points to a hyperscale data center campus 3C is currently delivering as representative of the company's best work: the largest contract in company history and one of the larger pre-engineered metal building scopes in the country. The multi-phase program combines a demanding national GC relationship, a compressed schedule, and a scope spanning supply through erection, and only a handful of firms in the country can take on work at this scale.

The financial architecture behind the project mattered as much as the construction plan itself. Payment structure, cash flow curve, change order administration and risk allocation in the subcontract all required careful negotiation up front, resulting in a structure designed to largely fund itself and protect the balance sheet. Timm also credits job costing discipline as essential, since a one percentage point swing in margin on a project this size represents a substantial sum.

3C Industries | GBQ Client Spotlight | Ohio CPA FirmGrowing By Relationship, Not By Map

3C's expansion into new geographies follows its clients rather than a fixed regional plan, with national GCs and end clients often asking the company to follow them to their next project. Timm said that approach carries less risk than entering a new market speculatively, though it introduces real back-office complexity, including multistate income and payroll tax, registrations, local tax regimes, prevailing wage requirements, and insurance and licensing that vary by jurisdiction. That is why Timm emphasizes the value of a construction-focused accounting partner who understands percentage-of-completion accounting, multistate apportionment for contractors, and surety-ready financial statements as specialties rather than general practice.

To protect consistency as it enters new markets, 3C also trains new employees in the Central Ohio area first, giving them time to learn the company's standards before working independently elsewhere. That same investment in consistency extends to how the company communicates internally, including regular leadership updates and an employee recognition program designed to keep field and office teams connected as the company scales, and how it explores efficiency, with a cross-departmental effort underway to identify practical uses for artificial intelligence in accounting, estimating, and other functions.

What's Next For 3C

3C's revenue has grown more than 100% year over year, and Timm's planning horizon contemplates more than doubling again in each of the next two years. Reaching that requires deepening self-performing capabilities, building adjacent service lines that serve the same mission-critical clients, and continuing to attract strong talent. Timm's advice for construction companies earlier in their own growth journey centers on protecting margin over revenue and building financial infrastructure, such as WIP schedules, job costing, and cash forecasting, before it's needed. For executives, he points to building surety, banking, and advisor relationships before they're urgently needed, along with hiring ahead of the growth curve.

GBQ's role, Timm said, is foundational to that next chapter: evaluating entity structure for new platforms, modeling the tax implications of how they're organized and capitalized, and keeping financial reporting at the standard 3C's surety, banks, and GC partners expect. Growth this fast punishes improvisation, and the structural decisions made in the next year will shape the next decade.
